In the past, the 1/2 inch steel plating on the range was too soft to allow jacketed ammo. The hard casing of jacketed ammo would cause "moon crater" type damage to the surface (see second picture below), so a lead only policy was put into place. Recent upgrades to the range have added a 1/4 inch plate of AR500 hardened steel over the top of the 1/2 inch steel already in place which can now withstand the impact of jacketed ammo. The club purchased 9 sheets of the AR500 hardened steel plates weighing in at a hefty 240 pounds each. The cutting and welding work was done by Bouchard Welding of Wilbraham and took about 2 1/2 days to complete.
Caliber size is still restricted to nothing larger than .45 (NO S&W 460 or 500s). In addition, the range also has a rifle restriction which allows ONLY .22 caliber rifles.
