What is a Turkey Shoot (Where's the turkey)?Sorry...there are no turkeys downrange, but depending on the prize pool, you could possibly go home with one! Turkey shoot participants are shooting both bird shot and slugs at paper targets to see who can get a hit closest to the center. Any shooter with an FID card, or minor shooters supervised by an adult, are encouraged to participate. Nenameseck club membership is not required.
What happens at a turkey shoot? All shooters first register and purchase tickets for the number and type of shooting events they wish to participate in. Additional tickets can be purchased later if desired. All shooters for a particular event (ie. Bird Shot) will then be called to the fireing line. Each shooter is then given one club supplied shell. The shooter then takes his or her best shot. After all shooters are finished, targets are collected and a winner for that round is selected. In most cases, Bird Shot rounds are fired using #9 shot and slug rounds use 1oz rifled slugs (no sabot slugs). A hit closest to the center is mostely a matter of luck, so all participants have an equal chance of winning. The slug shoot does require a little more accuracy.
What type of shotgun can I use?The Nenameseck Turkey Shoot allows the use of any shotgun with iron sights. Scopes of any kind are not allowed. The shotgun can be anything from a 12 Gauge to a .410 Gauge with any legnth barrel. No shotguns larger than 12 Gauge can be used. You must also use shells supplied by the club.
How much will it cost and what could I win? There are four types of turkey shoot matches. The Bird Shot, the Bird Shot Money round, the Slug Shoot, and the Slug Shoot Money round. The cost to enter the Bird Shot is $1.25, and $2.00 to enter the Bird Shot Money round. The Slug Shoot costs $1.50 to enter and the Slug Shoot Money round is $2.50. Winners of the Bird Shot or Slug Shoot matches have a choice of winning a $10 cash prize or their choice of available meat prizes (Approx $10 value). Winners of the Bird Shot Money Round take home $25 while the winners of the Slug Shoot Money Round take home $30.
How can I participate or get more information? The best way to find out what the Nenameseck Turkey Shoot is all about is to visit the club and take a look for yourself. Bring your shotgun along and try one one match to see how you like it, or just look around if you perfer. Please check the Calendar of events for the date of the next match and How to find us for directions to the club. If you have any additional questions, feel free to call Duane Pray at (413) 267-5871.
